Alumni Association Provides Eight Scholarships to
Class of 2008 Graduates

Thanks to the generous support of our members and the success of the Alumni Association’s fund raising programs, the Rocky River High School Alumni Association was pleased to present $7000 in scholarship awards to members of this year’s graduating class. Those students receiving Alumni support are:

Lisa Duge, $500 RRHS Alumni Assoc. Scholarship
Lisa will be attending The Ohio State University

Alexander Plachta, $500 RRHS Alumni Assoc. Scholarship
Alex will be attending The Ohio State University

Jamie Tylicki, $500 RRHS Alumni Assoc. Scholarship

Brooke Towner, $1000 Dr. Robert Cawrse Scholarship
Brooke will be attending College of Wooster

Manon McGovern, $1000 Bruce Miller, Class of 1970 Scholarship

Leah Emery, $1250 Dr. William Turner Memorial Scholarship
Leah will be attending The Ohio State University

Armando Toska, $1250 Dr. William Turner Memorial Scholarship
Armando will be attending Ohio Wesleyan University

Christopher Kane, $1000 Rex L. Zirbes Memorial Scholarship
Chris will be attending John Carroll University

In addition, as a result of a partnership with the Rocky River Education Foundation, scholarship donations can be tax deductible. Contact the Alumni Association to learn more about arranging memorial or named scholarships.



2008 Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

The RRHS Hall of Fame Selection Committee has announced this year’s inductees to the prestigious Rocky River High School Hall of Fame. Individuals selected for induction represent the four categories honored by the Hall of Fame: Athletics, Academics, Distinguished Alumnus or Distinguished Citizen. The following individuals will be recognized at this fall’s Homecoming Weekend induction. The 2008 as well as 2007 inductees will be recognized at the banquet on October 25th at St. Demetrios in Rocky River.

The Hall of Fame strives to recognize individuals who have excelled in one of four classifications: Athletics, Academics, Distinguished Alumnus or Distinguished Citizen. The qualifications for each area are outlined on the school website. Hall of Fame nominations are also available on the site. Nomination forms are due by March 15th of each year. Notes and News

• 35th Annual Alumni Soccer Game will be held at RRHS on August 9th, 2008. For more information please contact Pat Gillespie
• In Memory: Joe Smith, Class of 1993, passed away on June 22nd, 2008. Joe will be loved and missed by many friends and relatives especially the Rulli and Abrahamowicz families. Joe loved music, golf, basketball, baseball and especially cars. He was the owner and operator of North Coast Yardsmith Landscaping Company.
• In Memory: Phaedra Aingworth, former RRHS French teacher, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2008.
• The district saw 12 retirements this year in teaching and support staff. The amazing individuals that are a part of the support staff of the district include: Carole Goni, Joanne Duda, Mary Lou Eldred, Sharon Harris and Karen Naftzger. The teachers that helped to make the district the best it could be include Sharon Anghilante, Mary Jo Covey, Mary Haggard, Patricia Jason, Patricia Leonard, Pam Maly and Laureen Mooney.
• This fall the Women’s Golf team celebrates their 10th year as a varsity sport! The team was recognized as a varsity sport in the fall of 1998. It was one of the first women’s varsity golf team in the then SWC.

The event consists of a continental breakfast beginning at 7:30 A.M, lunch at the turn and dinner to follow golf. All this is available for $90 per golfer. We are limited to the first 144 golfers that register. Dinner only is available for $25 per person.

A Note from the President

Greetings Fellow Alums,

Transition by definition is “the movement or change from one position, state, stage, subject or concept to another”. This would be the perfect definition of my life since I graduated from college in 2006. I’ve transitioned in and out of jobs in an effort to find something full time. I’ve transitioned in and out of friendships as we all grow older and apart post high school. I’ve transitioned into the role of RRHS Alumni President. It’s been a little less than a year. I’ve learned the ropes and faced the challenges this organization has now and will continue to face in the future. As I look to the year ahead, I see four main priorities to keep things going and I need your help. Priority one, our database needs updating. Many of the addresses are out of date and many classes have only one or two members represented. Priority Two, if you have notes about yourself, classmates, or upcoming events, please let me know so that I can share with others! Priority Three, check out our website. The website has been changed from the one that was previously hosted through the Rocky River Schools. We were unable to edit it so a new one has been created. Please check it out and check back often: http://www.rrhsalumni.blogspot.com/. Lastly, Priority Four, consider a donation. Through the generous support of established named scholarships and through our efforts with the Spirit Run, we generate monies to gives scholarships to deserving seniors. However, it doesn’t leave much wiggle room for anything else. Several years ago, we went to electronic newsletters because it would cost thousands of dollars in postage alone to mail it out! I know that times are tough but any donation large or small would help!
